BBA partners with Discovery Clubs to take gospel into schools

At its April 16, 2007 meeting, Birmingham Baptist Association's Executive Board voted to partner with the Discovery Clubs of Alabama to take the gospel into schools.

Bob Curlee, retired pastor of Centercrest and other BBA/Alabama churches, shared the following facts about the 2006 school year:

  • 8 local elementary public schools had clubs
  • 9 churches participated
  • 550 students were enrolled
  • 220 volunteers worked an hour a week for 23 weeks.
  • 300 students have made professions of faith in the last few years.

For the coming year:

  • 20 schools have requested Clubs
  • Over 30 churches have already become involved.

"God has opened a door into the public schools," the board was told.

A Supreme Court decision in 2001 allows principals to invite any club or organization they desire to meet before or after school on school property. John Glasser, a 90-year-old retired lawyer, saw the opportunity for carrying the Bible and evangelism into public schools. He founded Discovery Clubs in 2004.

Father's Day

Churches are also encouraged to participate in the "Our Father's Day" program on Father's Day. Churches are asked to inform and involve their members through praying, volunteering to serve, and making a gift in honor or memory of their father.
