UAB Hospital

People come from both near and far away places to receive healthcare at the University of Alabama Hospital. Since 1975, the Southern Baptist community (Birmingham Baptist Association, Alabama Baptist State Convention and the North American Mission Board) has demonstrated that they value the provision of pastoral care in the state-owned hospital.

The Department of Pastoral Care at University Hospital has several staff chaplains and chaplain residents providing coverage at all times. The department welcomes the opportunity to minister unto persons referred by churches as well as assisting pastoral visitors within the hospital.

Since 1989, Danny Watkins has been serving as the Baptist chaplain at University Hospital. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Watkins served 15 years in Mississippi as a pastor. He earned both a master’s and doctoral degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. His doctorate is in psychology and counseling. Watkins is also a certified member of the Association of Professional Chaplains. Watkins and his wife Sue Ellen have two children, Wade and Molly. The family makes their home in Pelham.

PARKING PASSES: Parking passes for clergy can be obtained from the Department of Pastoral Care located in the West Pavilion on the first floor next to the Interfaith Chapel.

NEWSLETTER: Periodically, the department publishes a newsletter with information about what is going on within the department. If you would like to be placed on the mailing list then please notify the department.
